Things To Do |
Henderson
County boasts a variety of both urban and outdoor activities. Historic Downtown Hendersonville was entered into
the National Register of Historic Places in March of
1988, and provides some of the best shopping in the
area. A multitude of seasonal flowers and trees gives
Main Street its supreme beauty and enhances its small
town charm. Over 120 specialty shops, antique stores,
historical sites, and restaurants line the street,
offering something of interest for everyone in the
family. Each year, Historic Downtown Hendersonville
plays host to many cultural events such as the NC Apple
Festival held during Labor Day weekend, as well as other
arts and antique shows, car shows, and seasonal parades.
There are a number of outdoor adventures you can enjoy
in Henderson County. Some of the best camping, hiking,
mountain biking, climbing, fly fishing, and kayaking are
within driving distance of many homes in Henderson
County NC. The Green River offers the finest whitewater kayaking in Western North Carolina. Beginners
and experts alike will find a part of the river suitable
for their talents, with the section called “The
Narrows” offering some of the most exciting class 4 and
5 rapids around. Rumbling Bald Mountain, near Bat Cave
and Chimney Rock, offers a wide variety of boulders and
traditional routes for climbers. The French Broad River
and its tributaries are a popular location for local fly
fishermen.
The
historic community of Flat Rock has been called “the
Little Charleston of the Mountains”, and the entire
community is included in the National Register of
Historic Places. Its most popular attraction is the Flat
Rock Playhouse, founded in 1952. The playhouse began as
a few weeks of summer performances, but now hosts eight
months of plays including world premiers, Broadway
musicals, comedies, dramas, and more. In 1961 the Flat
Rock Playhouse was designated the state theatre of North
Carolina, and it is counted among the 10 best theatres
in the country.
