Cave, North Carolina |
Bat Cave
NC is located along the Broad River in Henderson County,
about 30 minutes from the Asheville metro area. Bat Cave
NC is located in one of the most beautiful regions in
the Blue Ridge Mountains. Located just outside of the
larger town of Hendersonville, Bat Cave is known among
many for its picturesque and well preserved nature
trails and the Bat Cave Preserve.
The Bat Cave Preserve is owned by The Nature
Conservancy, and can only be accessed through programs
and field trips. The keystone of the Preserve is, of
course, THE Bat Cave, that the town was named after.
Hikers and field trippers, through programs, can enter
the Preserve and learn about the endangered bat
population that calls the cave home. The Bat Cave,
however, is closed to the public.
Bat Cave
NC is widely recognized because it is the largest
known granite fissure cave in North America. Fissure
caves are formed from rocks splitting and movement of
the Earth, rather than by water eroding rocks, which is
how most caves are commonly formed. The cave is home to
a group of Indiana bats, who have come to call the cave
home through an effort of the Conservancy who wishes to
reestablish the endangered bats to their natural
habitat. Also calling Bat Cave home are 3 previously
unknown invertebrates that have been found. It is widely
known that Bat Cave and the surrounding Hickory Nut
Gorge area are home to an abundance of exotic wildlife
and hardwoods.
Bat Cave NC is just one of the many little towns in the
beautiful Hickory Nut Gorge area. The NC mountain real
